Funny thing is, even if we ate merienda (morning and/or afternoon), we never really got fat! Of course, was much younger then, haha.

What I really miss are the small bakeries in the probinsiya - they prolly all used (still use) Star margarine - essentially, plastic for your consumption! Better if they'd used lard. The best pan de sal ever was from one bakery in my late dad's small home town in western Batangas - thick brown crusty outside, tasty, chewy and soft inside - made with lard!

Now, lard... We make empanada with lard! I don't understand why people are so afraid of lard when it's natural. Star Margarine, meanwhile, is like you said, plastic for your consumption. :)
